The presence of Earth-like planets outside our solar system, in what is called the ”habitable zone”, has been predicted for some time, but identifying and measuring one marks the beginning of a new era in the search for life beyond Earth. But before getting into that part, let’s start by acknowledging the universe we are in, according to the incredible video that follows:

Despite the pertinence of the above masterful presentation, the possibility of other living beings and Earth-like planets around the universe, up to this point in our time, is not concrete. In addition to that, no credible evidence comes to prove the existence of other intelligent life — or lack thereof.

However, there are many theories, different ideas floating around, various points of view with the same end result: possibilities of life in the universe are infinite, more or less. But the main problem with these many points of view is that all these theories are based on assumptions and scientific guesses. We all know that no one has ever been able to go around the universe and check for alien life. No matter how hard astronomers, with the latest technology, have tried, none has ever been able to visually capture the whole picture of the entire universe at once. To be fair, the telescope ‘Hubble‘ has been doing a fantastic job for the past ten to fifteen years. And the telescope ‘James Webb’ that will replace is still a project right. That project is working to a 2018 launch date.

And while taking into consideration the fact that the universe is made of multiple galaxies; our own galaxy known as the Milky Way – about 100’000 light years across — and the Andromeda Galaxy (the closest galaxy similar to our own) are two million light years away from each other. How can our (scientific) theories and assumptions accurately apply to this environment when it comes to other intelligent lives? The use of mathematical extrapolation formulas may be helpful… Just may be.

In the end, the point to be made is the following: Life is a mind-boggling phenomenon. We can experience it right here on Earth, but, we’re still not sure whether that experience is possible outside our known world or not. At this point in time,  in our quest to find out if life is possible outside this planet, only science can lead us. And, it won’t be easy according to people like Roger Penrose. Actually, this famous british mathematician, makes it very hard to understand the possibility of our own existence on Earth, much less the existence of others throughout the universe. According to this Stephen Hawking’s friend, the odds against the existence of life on the planet Earth — and therefore in the universe — were on the order of 10 (to the power of 10(123)) to 1.

In practical terms, in mathematics, a probability of 1 in 10(50) means basically “zero probability“. Penrose’s number is more than trillion trillion trillion times less than that. In short, Penrose’s number tells us that the ”accidental” or “coincidental” creation of life in our universe is an impossibility. In fact, this Penrose’s theory is made to show and remind us how lucky we are to be on this blue planet.

Nevertheless, to the question ”Are we alone in the universe” and despite Penrose’s adamant theory, the Stephen Hawking’s theory seems to be more relevant. In today’s astronomers’ unrelenting quest for exoplanets with Earth properties, a new frontier has been reached: in our own galaxy, hundreds of Goldilocks planets are discovered every day.
